The Orpington is a chicken breed named after Orpington, England, made famous in part by this breed. Belonging to the English origin, the buff orpington was bred to be an excellent layer with good meat quality. Their large size and soft appearance together with their rich color and gentle contours make them very attractive, and as such its popularity has grown as a show bird rather than a utility breed. They go broody very often, and make great mothers.

Being rather heavy, the buff orpington chickens are able to fly small distances and rarely do, so they work well as backyard birds. Due to their build they do well in very cold climates.

The Buff Orpington has a heavy, broad body with a low stance, and the down from their body covers most of their legs. Buff Orpington chickens lay about 175 to 200 medium to large light-brown eggs a year. They do not stop laying in the winter.

Owner
I purchased 15 Buffy's in the spring and they are all doing well. I was kept informed of the delivery date and it was easy to coordinate with the post office for pick up. There hasn't been any health problems. They free range and are clean and happy. Thumbs up to my experience with californiahatchery. John

Lovely Personalities
Received Buff Orpingtons last year at this time, (Apr 2014). I'll admit it seemed a bit odd ordering live chicks online but without a doubt I was most impressed with the packaging and healthy babies. All arrived alert and chirping and all survived the first year except one that became egg bound. I choose the Orpingtons because I understand they make the best mothers. We'll soon find out as one of my hens just hatched 4 healthy little chicks. I now am considering purchasing Wyandottes and Delawares to add variety to my flock and would not hesitate placing that order with California Hatchery.
